The latest
USA Today/Gallup pre-election poll finds that likely voters say the
Democrats in Congress are better able to handle each of eight key election
issues than the Republicans in Congress. This includes two normally strong
Republican issues -- terrorism and moral standards in the country. In
fact, this is the first time Gallup has found Democrats as having an edge
on the terrorism issue.

The US-led "war on terror" has bolstered Iran's power and influence in the Middle East, especially over its neighbour and former enemy Iraqy. A report published by Chatham House said the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan had removed Iran's main rival regimes in the region. Israel's conflict with the Palestinians and its invasion of Lebanon had also put Iran "in a position of considerable strength" in the Middle East, said the think-tank.
